Marriage licences in Canada must be issued in the province or territory where the marriage is to take place. When you pay for your marriage license at Vital Statistics, you will be given several documents. One copy of the registration, along with the licence are returned by you in the self-addressed envelope to the Deputy Registrar – no postage is required. The small certificate is what you get to keep and it is the only document that you keep for your records once the ceremony is completed.
The second copy of the registration is what I get to keep for my records. Once you have returned the self-addressed envelope to the Deputy Registrar, you may order a more permanent copy of your marriage certificate if you wish.
Please ensure that two adult witnesses (age 19 or older) will be present to sign your registration. More may sign if you wish and the others can be younger but at least two must be 19 years of age or older. The name that you sign on the marriage registration is not binding. Either of you may use the name you are now using, each others or a hyphenation. Please refer any questions regarding the usage of names to the Deputy Registrar’s office so that you can be advised of your options under Yukon legislation.
If you need more information about obtaining your marriage license, you can contact the Deputy Registrar @ Vital Statistics:
In order to make sure that your wedding is legal, the following text must be included in the vows that you recite during your wedding ceremony. No adjustment to this text is allowed.
“I ______________, do solemnly declare that I do not know of any lawful impediment why I, ______________ may not be joined in matrimony to ______________, and I call upon these persons here present to witness that I, ______________ do take thee, ______________ to be my lawful wedded husband (or wife).”
You will be given a sample of some marriage vows when you receive your marriage license from Vital Stats. You do not have to use them or you may choose to use only parts or you can make up your own vows so long as the small section above is incorporated because as mentioned, this must be said by both of you.
